Yesterday began the TCMFF 2017 event which continues through Sunday, April 9 and this year has already been pretty spectacular. However, one of the first event to be held at the fest was a tribute and recognition of the passing of Robert Osborne, or as we like to call him “Robert O.”
The 2017 TCM Classic Film Festival is dedicated to Robert Osborne and my first event at the fest was to attend a special tribute session to the TCM Host. It was held in the Chinese 1 theater and it was filled to capacity. Before the start of the event, the audience was shown a great video that Robert himself used to show to highlight his skills as an announcer and host.
At the event were TCM staff members and friends who shared memories and stories about Robert, celebrating his life and love of classic films. Heading the panel was Ben Mankiewicz who introduced several of those at TCM who worked directly with Robert. As a special guest, Robert’s lifelong friend, Diane Baker was there to talk about how she first met Robert and their friendship together.
It was bittersweet, but I was glad I attended to pay my respects to the classy man that Robert was.
I was very, very impressed with what Ben Mankiewicz had to say about Robert which, I think showed his true feelings about him.
Read more about Ben’s remembrance of Robert by reading his The Hollywood Reporter article. It’s very touching and beautifully said. Bravo Ben!!

As the afternoon started, I attended several events in the Roosevelt Hotel including the Backlot Trivia held in the lobby and an amazing trivia contest held in Club TCM. Man, I thought I knew a lot of about classic movies, but I was put to shame by those who knew the vaguest nuances of the era. Still, it was fun.
Then I watched the red carpet get assembled on Hollywood Boulevard and that’s how I learned that comedian Don Rickles had just died. I watched several people placing flowers on his star on the Boulevard just across from the red carpet.
Then, that evening the celebrities and press took over the red carpet to attend a showing of “In The Heat Of the Night.” The celebration was for the film’s 50th anniversary. It was great to see that the stars of the film Sidney Portier and Lee Grant, were there to celebrate.
