The first Ava Gardner film I ever saw was one of her very early films, prior to her big break with The Killers. Ghosts on the Loose (1943) was the film, and was by far more of a vehicle for the East Side Kids than for Gardner. Ava was also less than impressed by what she felt was an unprofessional approach to the making of the film.
Still, it was all experience for this gal, who was still prone to much anxiety at this point when going before a camera.
It wasn’t Gardner’s acting ability which brought her much media attention during her early days in Hollywood. It was her romance and marriage to actor Mickey Rooney, who was attracted to her the moment he saw her.
After watching Mogambo (1953), The Killers (1946), The Barefoot Contessa (1954), and On the Beach (1959), I was very interested in learning about Ava’s life, so I bought “The Secret Conversations” on audio book, by Peter Evans and Ava Gardner. Since then I have seen One Touch of Venus (1948) and The Snows of Kilimanjaro (1952). I have also read the biography Ava Gardner; Love Is Nothing by Lee Server.
The discovery of Ava Gardner, her arrival in Hollywood, and the events which occurred after her arrival seem like something out of a fairy tale on the surface. Look deeper and it plays like a high drama.
