Summary
This
is a haunting, sobering portrayal of a writer who goes on a three-day
self-destructive drinking binge. Ray Milland portrays alcoholic
Don Birnam, a dissatisfied, failed writer who lives off his supportive
brother, Wick, portrayed by Philip Terry. During
a weekend while his brother Wick goes away on vacation, Don uses
this opportunity to go on the biggest drinking binge of his life.
His desperation at waking up in the morning and wanting a drink is
so haunting and believable that you feel his anguish. An absolutely
brilliant performance by Ray Milland and
superbly directed by the legendary Billy Wilder. A must see
for those who would enjoy a sobering, intelligent film. |
