June 13, 2004 - Hepburn auction is windfall of the year
By Olivia Barker, USA TODAY - Katharine Hepburn's fans seem as enamored of her lovers as she was. This bust of Hepburn co-star/companion Spencer Tracy went for $316,000 at a Sotheby's aution of the actress' possessions. Sotheby's A 3-inch bronze bust of Spencer Tracy, sculpted by the Academy Award-winning actress, garnered the highest price among the more than 2,000 Hepburn possessions auctioned off last week. After a heated bidding war, the bust sold for $316,000, amid audience cheers, to an anonymous buyer on the telephone; auctioneer Sotheby's had estimated it would go for $3,000 to $5,000. A platinum, diamond and sapphire brooch, a gift to Hepburn from Howard Hughes, sold to a Pacific Northwest collector for $120,000, the second-highest item (estimate: $15,000 to $20,000). The total take? A "stunning" $5.9 million, according to Sotheby's, far more than the $1 million anticipated. Wayne Newton bought Gertrude, the canoe from On Golden Pond, for $19,200. Danielle Steel snagged three hats for $3,600. Leila Dunbar, director of Sotheby's collectibles division, says other celebrities participated in the sale, though she couldn't reveal names. |
