The Philadelphia Story brought
Kate back to the front as a great screen actress. This film also marked
the beginning of Kate as a business woman. She had purchased the screen
rights from Phillip Barry and was responsible choosing the director
and costars.
It
still rings true today with its story that portrays our insatiable
desire to know what society's elite do in their private lives. Connor
and Elizabeth Imbrie, played by Ruth Hussey come to photograph and
write a story about Kate's marriage to George Kittredge a stuffy
successful businessman. Kate is forced to let them into her life
because the magazine they work for, "Spy" threatens to
expose her father's affairs if she doesn't. Cary Grant plays C.K.
Dexter Haven her first husband who is the instrument used by Spy
Magazine to get their team inside.
The
screenplay is well written and beautifully acted; worth an evening's
entertainment. Although the part of Tracy Lord was tailor made for
her, she brought a new dimension and freshness to the role in the
screen version. For James Stewart in the part of writer Mike Connor
won an Oscar for his portrayal.
