BIOGRAPHY: Childhood and Family
See new photos in Gallery section of Kate's family estate Fenwick!

Kate lived her childhood in Connecticut with her family that included five brothers and sisters. The children's names were:
  • Tom - b. 1905
  • Kate - b. 1907
  • Dick - b. 1911
  • Bob - b. 1913
  • Marion - b. 1918
  • Peg - b. 1920

Since there was a four year gap between children and since Tom was only two years older then Kate, they became very close and Kate and Tom were more like parents then siblings to Dick, Bob, Marion and Peg.

In my family too, there was the same kind of gap between siblings and I can understand what she felt. I too was the second of five children and my younger siblings did seem like "the kids".

Kate's parents were both liberals, her mother being a suffragette and her father being a doctor. They were "well to do" but the children were brought up with a strong work ethic and lots of common sense.

Growing up in a loving family gave her the confidence she needed to conquer the world of acting. However, at the young age of thirteen she was shattered by her brother Tom's death. Apparently he had tried out a hanging trick which backfired and caused his accidental death. Kate was devastated by this and for years she used Tom's birthday as her own. After Tom's death Kate was tutored privately. She did go to Bryn Mawr College and was considered a respectable student although acting was much more important to her then her studies. Still she graduated with a B.A. in Drama in 1928. That same year, while living in New York she married Ludlow Ogden Smith. The marriage didn't last too long and they were divorced in 1934. She had a great friend in Laura Harding who is pictured below. On the right is another of her beau's, Leland Hayward who was also her agent. They lived together for several years in New York.
