| Early Films: Christopher Strong, 1933
|
| Christopher
Strong, truly helped to define Kate
as a "new woman" of film. Directed by Dorothy Arzner, one
of the few successful female directors in Hollywood at the time, helped
to promote Kate as an independent woman who was in the forefront of
the new challenges and opportunities provided to women in the early
part of the twentieth century. This was Kate's first starring role
which unfortunately didn't do more then get favorable reviews from
the critics. The public didn't find the story as fascinating as her
previous films and stayed away. |

Kate
plays Lady Cynthia Darrington, an aviatrix who meets and falls in
love with Sir Christopher Strong played by Colin Clive. Sir Strong
is married and rather then tell him that she is going to have a
baby and since she knows their relationship is doomed she decides
to take a challenge to attempt the world speed record. Her plane
climbs to 30,000 feet where she takes off her oxygen mask, loses
control and dies in the crashing airship.
Kate
was truly a fashion plate in this film and the moth costume has
to be seen.
