Jack helped her advance her career and took his advice.
Garbo was very sociable during this time and the entertained
all the time, especially Sunday afternoons.
 Jack
proposed many times, but Garbo never would say yes, until
one time, when King Vidor and
Eleanor Boardman were going to be married, Garbo got sentimental
and said yes to a double ceremony. The wedding approached,
but on the day of the wedding, Garbo took off and never showed
up. At the wedding, occurred another event which fed the
Gilbert/Mayer feud. When Garbo was late, Jack was very nervous
and Mayer patted him on the back and said" What's the matter with you? What
do you have to marry her for? Why don't you just F..k her
and forget about it?" Jack went mad and grabbed
Mayer by the throat and threw him on the bathroom floor.
Mayer's aide, Eddie Mannix pulled them apart. Mayer shouted, Your
finished, Gilbert! I'll destroy you if it costs me a million
dollars!"
After this, Gilbert told Garbo that she would have to move
out of his house or pay rent. She stayed on until he married
hit next wife, Ina Clair and never paid a cent.
They made two more films together, Love, a version of Tolstoy's
Anna Karenina and A Woman of Affairs. They attempted marriage
again, but Garbo always backed out. She continued to live
with him on and off. They fought, made up and then broke
up again over and over.
Jack would always say complimentary things about Garbo,
but she on the other hand seemed to enjoy confusing everyone
about her feelings, by claiming sometime that they were just
friends and others that she loved him dearly.
It's believe that although Jack had two more wives after
his affair
with Garbo that he continued to be in love with her. I believe
Garbo loved him too because she was instrumental in trying
to help Jack get through the transition to sound by insisting,
that he play opposite her in Queen
Christina, Jack's last truly good picture.
