The film is written by Monroe's then husband Arthur Miller and directed by John Huston. It was the last film for both Gable and Monroe and both are excellent in their portrayal of their characters. Some have blamed Monroe's tempermental character for causing Gable's death shortly after the completion of the film.
Roslyn, played by Marilyn Monroe is a beautiful woman recently divorced. She meets Gay Langland, an independent, aging cowboy and Guido, Gay's friend, a part time mechanic who is sad because of the death of his wife. Rosalyn and her landlady, Isabelle Steers, are convinced to go to the home Guido is building in the country. Then, Guido has an idea to go into the hills and round up some wild horses, often called "misfits" because they are too small for riding. They pick up a third partner, Perce Howland, played by Montgomery Clift. When Roslyn learns that the horses they capture are to be sold for dog food, she is horrified and begs Gay to call of the plan.
