The silent era illustrates DeMille's work at its most creative. His reputation as an innovator was developed in the making of these films and they show us why he was such a revolutionary pioneer of the film industry. Note: The following silent films are not covered here but instead in Epic Spectacles: King of Kings, Joan the Woman and The Ten Commandments (first version).
Squaw Man, Released by Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Co., 1914. This film was the first adaptation from a play and DeMille's first Lasky film. This was the first film feature (six reels) and the first to show cast credits. This film is also to be seen in the section entitled remakes.
