Jezebel
Warner Brothers, 1938
Jezebel
is a romantic melodrama that takes place in early 1850s New
Orleans ante-bellum society. It studied Southern chivalry and
honor. The role of the title character was offered as compensation
to Bette when she lost the opportunity to play Scarlett O'Hara
in Gone With The Wind. In fact, the film has been called a
black-and-white version of the famous Selznick film that was
in its pre-production stages. There is a plot that revolves
around Julie wearing a red dress to a ball instead of the classic
white dress that all unmarried girls wore at the time. Because
of the beautiful staging and cinematography, we don't even
notice that the infamous red dress is in black and white. Its
a classic must see for all Davis fans.
