Mildred Pierce is my favorite Joan Crawford film. This film noir directed by Michael Curtiz was Joan's comeback film. She had just been let go by MGM and was determined to prove L.B. Mayer wrong in his lack of confidence in her star power and she did just that. This film was so successful that she even won an Oscar for her performance.
The story revolves around Mildred, played by Joan who is a housewife and mother of two daughters. Immediately we see that the marriage between Mildred and her husband, Bert Pierce, played by Bruce Bennett, is unhappy and she they immediately separate. becasue he is having an affair with another woman. Mildred's loneliness causes her to give all her devotion and love to her two girls. She spoils them as much as possible even scrimping and saving to get them whatever they need to provide them with a better life. The eldest, Veda, played by Ann Blyth, is a demanding, snobbish girl who treats her mother horribly. Even so, Mildred will do anything for her.
After her separation, Mildred becomes a waitress in order to continue spoiling the girls with piano and dance lessons and beautiful clothes. Soon her youngest daughter dies of pneumonia convincing Mildred that she must cater to Veda even more then before. Soon she becomes successful and buys a restaurant which grows into a chain of restaurants. She meets the aristocratic Monty Beragon, played by Zachary Scott and the film continues with the development of their relationship and we see her finally marry him to please Veda who has run away, even though all he seems to want from her is her money.
The film opens with Monty's death and Joan says she did it, but you'll have to see it for yourself to see if she really did murder him. The supporting cast of Jack Carson and Eve Arden are noteworthy. Its a real treat!
