Prof. Sunderland Melville Cooper .... Cuthbert Sidney Toler .... Daniel Webster Gene Lockhart .... Major William O'Neal Clara Blandick .... Louisa Abbott Frank Conroy (I) .... John C. Calhoun Nydia Westman .... Maybelle Peggy O'Neal, played by Joan is an inkeeper's daughter in Washington in the 1830's. She is friendly with Andrew Jackson, played by Lionel Barrymore and his wife, Rachel, played by Beulah Bondi who is not favored by Washington society because of her previous divorce. The story revolves aroung Peggy's life and loves and how she helps Andrew Jackson during his presidency. She marries twice, Navy lieutenant, Bow Timberlake, played by Robert Taylor and John Eaton, played by her then husband, Franchot Tone (see my site devoted to him). Joan looks quite handsome in this period piece even though she is not best suited to this type of role. Its worth a watch to see the costumes.
