Joan plays stenographer Flaemmchen who is working at the Grand Hotel. The story is an ensemble piece which parallels the lives of several residents of the hotel. There is Preysing, played by Wallace Beery, an industrialist whom Joan works for. Kringelein, played by Lionel Barrymore, a bookkeeper who is dying and has taken his life savings to stay at a luxurious hotel, Grusinskays, played by Greta Garbo as an unhappy ballerina who is wooed by Baron von Gaigern, played by John Barrymore. The Baron is only interested in her jewels and is gradually won over by her charms. This is the film in which Garbo spoke the famous words "I want to be alone". However its not just a Garbo vehicle. Joan gives an excellent performance as she moves up the ladder of success. It was an ingenious move to cast all these great stars in the same film. A must see!
