Random Harvest
directed by: Mervyn Le Roy
Metro Goldwyn Mayer, 1942
This is an incredibly contagious melodrama which I can watch again and again. Smithy, is a WWI soldier who is injured and in an asylum with no memory. He breaks out and meets Paula, a music hall actress played by Greer Garson, who takes him in. They move to a lovely cottage, marry and have a son. Although Smithy cannot remember anything about his past they are happy beyond all dreams. He takes to writing and one day, he learns that his work is to be published. He travels to Liverpool and is in an accident which restores the memory of his previous life. Unfortunately, he forgets about his current life and goes back to his old life of the privileged upper class. Paula must find him and when she does he has no memory of her. What happens next is why this film is truly worth watching.
