Great idea to do this. I often think about H.o.I. which I can recall in detail from 1950.
It made me want to teach in a university, which I do...if
only real universities were like the one in Ivy!
This is a great piece of history.

Have always been a great Ronald Colman admirer and you can imagine my surprise to learn that so many others shared my feelings. This is a splendid site and given the generally low standards present in today's jejeune culture, you have given me hope for the future of western civilization.

Hate to say this, but I remember the originals. There was a lot of music in our family, and the theme song was a favorite - I can still do the bass and the lead. Not at the same time, of course! After many years in the commercial broadcasting business, I am now teaching at a mid-sized Midwest university in Indiana. Not Ivy College, most certainly. Is there somewhere I can get the entire theme song? I remember hearing it in its entirety at some point, but don't remember when. This is a wonderful website and I keep coming back on an irregular basis when time permits.

Jim Culbertson

Favorite Colman movie is Talk of the Town. I also enjoyed all of his work on radio, especially with his lovely wife. It does seem strange to me how he always tried to exemplify the ideal of someone who was born in the United States, yet there was no accounting for his English accent in his film roles and as William Todhunter Hall. That's the wonderful thing about acting: You can be someone you aren't, like a native born American, even if you don't even sound like it.

Thanks so much for the lovely tribute to one of my favorites. Other than enjoying his many films, I have a minor near-connection - I just missed being cast as the young Lucie Manette, losing out to my friend and playmate, Fay Caldicott. Sorry I missed getting to know Mr. Colman. I think my favorite film is "If I Were King", because it features two of the finest, Ronald Colman AND Basil Rathbone, both at the top of their form, but the Prisoner of Zenda is a close second. Thanks again.

This is a lovely website. Like yourself, I cannot understand why Colman is largely forgotten today. A Tale of 2 Cities, Random Harvest and Lost Horizon are films of pure beauty, and I can watch them again and again. Like yourself, it was the film of A Tale of 2 Cities that first introduced me to Colman; it was shown as an accompaniment to Barry Norman's Hollywood Greats in 1978. By the way, I had a good piece of luck last year. I ordered 'If IWere KIng' from an Amazon America; I took a chance because American videos are not always compatible with British machines; it worked!

Hi, Lynn! My wife and I have been "into" old movies, mostly from the 30's and 40's, for years, and Ronald Colman is one of our very favorite actors. We love If I Were King, Random Harvest, The Talk of the Town, Lucky Partners,The Prisoner of Zenda, A Tale of Two Cities, and My Life With Caroline.
So we were very pleased to find this very informative bio on him, but even more to have the chance to downlod these radio shows. We sent $5.00, and plan to do so for every two shows we download. Thank you very much for making these shows and your site available!

I dearly love "Lost Horizon". I got goose bumps when I first saw it in about 1961 when I was 13. I got chills of recognition hearing Sam Jaffe say that he envisioned a world where everyone was kind to one another. It was the start of a life long spiritual seeking. I do vaguely remember "The Halls Of Ivy". It really strikes a bell with me. I look forward to hearing some of the shows in your archives. Bottom line is I am a big fan of Ronald Colman. He is right up there with another favorite of the Golden Age, Jeanette MacDonald. Thank you for a wonderful website.

I was ten when I first heard the Halls of Ivy and I had no idea who Ronald Colman was, let alone his wife. I was hooked immediately. My mind fills with lots of sounds that turn into beautiful pictures when I listen. My big favorites were the detective and Mystery/Horror shows, Let's Pretend while eating my Coco Wheats on Saturday morning; but that song, The Halls of Ivy, stayed with me through the years and it always gave me a sensation of beauty and serenity. You have a beautiful site and it's very well organized. I'd never have the patience to upkeep something like this.

I was always an admirer of Ronald Colmans' voice (I am a Broadcaster) and his elegant style. Some years ago I took my son to his gravesite overlooking the sea in Santa Barbara and was quite moved by the beautiful black marble headstone and the apt inscription from "The Tempest". I, too, am amazed that he has been forgotten. (Presumably, the result of the scandal-free life of a true gentleman.) Bill Moen

So excited about your wonderful site! I am still not used to the idea of looking for so many different things on the internet ( This is my first computer! ) Just for the heck of it, I thought I would look up Mr. RC, as I am always looking for books and such to add to my collection. Amazing! Never did I imagine that there would be a website for him! Oh, what a wonderful actor and truly elegant man. I was hopelessly enamoured when I saw " A Tale of Two Cities " as a younster. At 41, I am still hopelessly devoted and am grateful for the joy he has shared with so many through his work. Bravissimo Madame webmaster, and best regards to all...

Great site and happy 4 July to all in the USA. Where exactly in Richmond was RC born and how long did he live there? What was the road name and house number and does the house still exist? If so, is there a heritage plaque on the house? Where I now live in Sutton there is such a plaque on a house nearby saying that Noel Coward lived there as a boy. Anything similar for RC in Richmond?

My first Ronald Colman film was A Double Life, and it blew me away. I had never seen such a dramatic and full charachter as his was in this film. The ending took my breath away. It was after that film I began watching all of his greatest films. He was a dynamic actor for his time. We are fortunate to be able to see him in action in all of his films. I agree with your description of "His films are great for a snowy afternoons". Peace to all Vince

A very informative and interesting web site. I was raised on a diet of old movies and tend to find them more watchable than many of the modern ones--also, the old stars seem to have more charisma and personality than most of the ones we have today.
My father is also a Ronald Coleman fan and has a huge video library of his and other classic movies.

I have been a fan of Mr Colman, most of my life. Prisoner of Zenda, being my favorite all time film. I could never get over the amazing amount of honor and sensitivity that Mr. Colman was able to project in his movie roles. As it turns out he was that way in his life as well, so I guess in many ways he was just playing him self. I believe his experiences in the first world war had a major inpact on his life, and that was why he could play the role of adventurer so well. This is a very professional site, I will save it in my favorites list and come back often. Thanks so much for making Mr. Colman come back to all of us.

Hello!
I am an enthusiastic old movie fan, I was actually brought up on them! I am rather young (17 as of June) but I find that I prefer old movies (1920's-1940's) to "new movies". I enjoy many old actors and actresses, my favorite actor being Ronald Colman. His performances always amaze me! And what a voice.. none compare!!
Thank you Lynn for putting so much time and effort into this.. I really appreciate it!!!
God Bless you always ><>

lynn i've admired all your various tributes to the classic movies and stars. they're informative and so nice to look at! one thing that shocks me about ronald colman is from "the lost horizon." the look in his eyes before he left shangri-la, such a mixed emotion of self-doubt, indecision, and the gusto before abandonment. i'm halfway through "a double life" now, and couldn't help stopping by your classy site again.

I do have "A Tale of Two Cities" on video and I would say it's one of my all time greats, Ronald's acting in this movie is one of the finest displays I have ever seen. The warmth in his acting is brilliant, you don't see it these days.

Unusual, I think, for both of us tolike the same actors & same films. We also like Cary Grant, Patrick Macnee, David Jannsen and others. The Fugitive was our favorite TV series, followed by The Avengers. Dame Diana Rigg was great. That's enough, huh? Jim Dailey

I spent 47 years in St. Louis radio so, for the most part, voices were important to me. But, no one ever approached Ronald Colman, who mesmerized me as a child in "A Tale of Two Cities". Orson Welles and Alexander Scourby were runners-up in my opinion....but distant second.

Viewing your website on Ronald Colman was very much akin to spending time with a valued friend. How sad that so few of today's generation are familiar with this man's work or character! I can think of many actors who were more accomplished, certainly who were more handsome, more versatile - and far more publicized. Given all this, Colman stands out. Why? He was really a thinking man's actor. The traits he embodied - intellectual fortitude, gentle self-effacement, silent courage, manly conviction - were not the sort of traits which audiences en masse could then fully appreciate. Today, when obscene language, crude gestures, tatooed arms and pierced tongues are a veritable passport to Hollywood superstardom, the sort of world-weary integrity which this gentlemen embodied is either dismissed or denigrated. What a pity- for it is the Ronald Colman types, those who bore life's nastiest vicissitudes with smiling stoicism and a closed mouth, who built so much of "modern civilization". In some ways, Colman was a more urbane, less declamatory sort of Gregory Peck. It is not a type one sees in film anymore and the world is far sadder for it.

Wonderful to hear Ronald Coleman's voice again. I must have been 5 or 6 when I began listening to "The Halls of Ivy," and it is amazing the impression it made--the theme song and all. And watching his films at summer camp--the hiss of the soundtrack, the clatter of the projector--unforgettable. And "Lost Horizon" is the perfect antidote for our Bush-ed reality!

I discovered Ronald Colman about 1956 when I was about nine years old. The film was "Lost Horizon." Colman was one of the truly magical actors of Hollywood's Golden Age. He had the ability to completely mesmerize his audience with his beautiful voice and suave and cultuled style. Whether in "A Tale of Two Cities," "The Prisoner of Zenda," "If I Were King," or many others, his performances were utterly captivating. No actor has ever moved me like Colman.

It is indeed sad that the current generations don't know Ronald Colman. They are so focused on the actors and films of today that they miss out on some of the greats of yesterday. But great performances are eternal. Ronald Colman will live on as one of the finest actors to have ever graced the screen, accessible to all to take the time to search for greatness.

This is a great site, no doubt and it shows a real admiration for that great actor and man that was Ronald Colman. I discovered him about 3 years ago when I could buy that gorgeous DVD of Lost Horizon edited by Columbia (a wonderful work of restoration). Of course I'd seen many of his films since I was a kid but here in Spain, most films are dubbed, so I hadn't been able to appreciate his unique voice, which is, of course, one of his most remarkable traits. So when I had the opportunity to see and hear him as he really was, I was deeply impressed. Now I'm a total fan of Ronald Colman, and I can't understand why he's now so forgotten when he was the first real star in cinema, worthy of being called like that. Congratulations for your great site. I really enjoyed reading it. By the way, I'd love to contact fans of Ronald Colman from all over the world, so here's my e-mail address in case someone wants to drop me a line. Thank you. Bye. tonyroco1@hotmail.com

He has been a favorite of mine since I was, what, perhaps 8 years old when I first saw him in A Tale of Two Cities on television.
One problem with your site, though. I cannot get the audio to play when I click onto the vintage radio icon. Ronald Colman was my first heart-throb when I was at school back in 1945. I absolutely adored him and bunked off school more than once to go and see his films. I was so thrilled every time I went through Richmond, Surrey on the bus because this was where he was born. My happiest memory is when he won his Oscar and came to London for the opening of A Double Life. As I watched that film on TV yesterday I thought there must be a website for him somewhere and now I have found it. I dont have time right now to browse it properly, but I'll be back. So nice to know so many other people love him too.

Had fun visiting Mr. Colman's page. Recently watched Random Harvest for the umpteenth time - greatest tearjerker ever. Have a great interview with Greer Garson, late in her life. In it she describes a visit by the Colman's to her ranch in the west. The group went one evening to a local barn dance for an evening of square dancing. Unfortunately when they arrived the " caller " was unavailable for some reason. Guess who volunteered to do the calling and was a great success! Apparently he was a man of many talents with a really great sense of humour.

He has been my favorite since 1937. The most handsome and the most romantic voice this century. I guess Hollywood will never return to the Gentleman stars. great site.

Many thanks for setting up a Ronald Coleman web site--I had searched in vain for one before. Couldnt imagine why he would be left out!!!

He can set an example even today as to how a decent person should treat others.
