The Light That Failed
directed by: William Wellman
Paramount Studios, 1939

Faithful recreation of Rudyard Kipling's great romance of Dick Heldar, artist, adventurer, gentleman unafraid, gloriously done by a very distinguished cast set against the panorama of British imperial ambition in the Sudan.! Colman brings greatness to the role of the war correspondent-artist slowly losing his sight to a war wound. He creates a sensation with his portrait of courtesan Lupino, who falls in love with him but proves unable to surmount class distinctions. Rather than accepting his blindness, Colman opts for the noble gesture, seeking death in battle against the fuzzy-wuzzies. The third film try in 25 years for this Kipling story.
